Taxon sampling lists proposed for AFTOL

As part of the AFTOL project, mycologists from around the world have been preparing lists of exemplar taxa for inclusion in a kingdom wide phylogenetic study of the Fungi. The lists represent taxa that will be included in multigene analyses as well as candidates for the study of non-nucleotide characters that will focus on subcellular and biochemincal traits. These lists should be viewed as amendable documents that are subject to change as the AFTOL project matures and new taxa are discovered. Anyone is invited to participate in development of the lists and in providing specimens for study. Multiple taxa may be proposed for any one taxon (e.g., multiple species within a genus, or multiple genera within a family) and more than one person may offer to provide identical or similiar species. This latter point is important as often a particular specimen or species may present problems in sampling and a second closely related alternative must be examined. All data that are generated as part of the AFTOL will be immediately returned to the laboratory that provided the species in question, as well as immediately released to an web accessible AFTOL database. Please see the AFTOL proposal and management plan for additional details on policies regarding data release and authorship.

Taxon lists:

Taxa proposed for sampling of non-nucleotide characters

David McLaughlin is coordinating the sampling of non-nucleotide characters. The emphasis in character sampling is on subcellular (e.g., flagellar apparatus, nuclear division, etc.) and biochemical traits (e.g,. cell wall carbohydrates). Because the sampling of many of these characters is more labor and time intensive than molecular data, taxon sampling is focused at the ordinal level. Anyone wishing to participate in this part of the project should contact David.

Taxa proposed for sampling of Chytridiomycota and Zygomycota

Rytas Vilgalys is coordinating the sampling of molecular data from the basal lineages of Fungi, the Chytridiomycota and Zygomycota. Approximately 10,000 bp will be sampled from seven loci for 100 Chytridiomycota and 200 Zygomycota. Anyone wishing to participate in this part of the project should contact Rytas.

Taxa proposed for sampling of the Basidiomycota

David Hibbett is coordinating the sampling of molecular data from the Basidiomycota. Approximately 400 taxa will be sampled for ~10,000 bp of data from seven loci. Anyone wishing to participate in this part of the project should contact David.

Taxa proposed for sampling of the Ascomycota

Francois Lutzoni and Joey Spatafora are coordinating the sampling of molecular data for the Ascomycota. Approximately 800 taxa will be sampled for ~10,000 bp of data from seven loci. Francois is in coordinating the sampling of lichenized fungi and closely related nonlichenized lineages. Joey is coordinating the sampling of the remainder of the nonlichenized Ascomycota and anamorph species. Anyone wishing to participate in this part of the project should contact Francois and/or Joey. To facilitate communication, AFTOL is following the classification of Eriksson et al 2002.
