Cordycepscf. irangiensis
Numerous species of Cordyceps occur on ants with the most frequent identification being C. myrmecophila Ces. There exists, however, signficant taxonomic controversy surrounding the group and it is likely that many collections are misidentified. This collection differs from C. myrmecophila in possessing a more robust stipe and partspores that are more fusiform rather than truncate like C. myrmecophila. Its partspore morphology is most similar to C. irangiensis Moureau, but a definitive ID is lacking. Collected in Washington State and photographed by Wes Colgan.
